It makes me feel quite cultural that I spent a good part of my day in an art gallery. Pedro Botero is a very prolific Colombian artist, from Medellín, mostly known for his sculpture. At least that’s how I would have known him for. The statues I know are usually of what I would describe as fat women. There was one in San José in Costa Rica, and one, popularly known as ‘La Gordita’ (The Fat Woman) in Cartagena. I find it very easy art. Almost cartoonish.
He has donated a lot of his art to the museum of Antioquia here in Medellín, and I really enjoyed my visit there today. There were a lot of paintings, which I hadn’t ever seen. They’re in the same style (which he calls ‘voluminous’ rather than ‘fat’), which shows features out of proportion with large heads and short arms. Although I still think they’re cartoonish, they deal with some serious subjects, such as the drug wars and the death of Pablo Escobar. But it does seem strange to see pictures, in the same cartoony style, of Christ.
