Desfile de Balleneras
I popped into Centro to see what was happening on Saturday afternoon, and watched the start of the Desfile de Balleneras. The ‘beauties’ were announced and marched up and down on what seemed to be tables put together, and then came into smaller boats, where they removed their wraps and headed out into the harbour…

Off to the whaling parade
Good morning. The Independence celebrations continue, and this afternoon I’m off to see the desfile de balleneras, which seems to have an unfortunate translation as whaling parade. Given that it’s when the Miss Colombia contestants take to the water.

For today I’m writing from a very noisy Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, where we’re in the middle of the Independence celebrations, or Carnaval, as it’s also known. Just home from watching the parade, and it’s very noisy with fireworks…
